Do You Have Blind Obedience To Christ?

A Lesson From Hosea

Who makes all of your decisions? How are all of your decisions made? Do you make them based on your emotions? finances? prayer? A lot of people feel their life is their own and their free to live it any way they darn well choose. There’s no person or process to consult before finalizing a decision, despite how big or how small the decision. But, if you are a believer, a Christian, I challenge your thought process. God made us in His image and for His purpose. There is a specific purpose for your life and every decision you make has an impact. God has something only you can fulfill. Think about it, the Bible says, we are His workmanship created for his good works. It also tells us God says, “I know the plans I have for you”. It has been this way since the beginning of the creation of the earth. Every character in the Bible had a purpose to fulfill and so do you. How does one follow God’s daily instructions for their life and not our own wants and needs?

I’ve often wondered about my purpose. Why am I here? What is my good work in the kingdom to be completed? It’s obvious to me that I have one and not just because I am here on earth, but because I am still here. I lived near misses my entire life. My father tried to burn the house down three times. In high school my cousin was shot just after I left the restaurant. In undergrad my good friend went to prison for 50 years for murder. In grad school my good friend was murdered. Trust me, I think I know how Jesus felt when he was intentionally moved from place to place to prevent King Herod from killing him and though I’ve received glimpses from God hinting at who I am to become, let’s just say I’ve got a long way to go.

But what if God’s purpose for your life wasn’t something you considered good. What if it wasn’t something you really wanted to do or be involved in? Take Hosea (in the book of Hosea), God’s instructions to him was get married. Ok, that’s not so bad. But then God said, “marry a prostitute”. WHAT? That’s not cool. I can’t imagine Hosea wanted to select a woman of the evening for his beloved. Would you?

In obedience he not only married a prostitute named Gomer, they had children. Even though Hosea provided a good home for them, Gomer, returns to the lifestyle she once knew time after time.Yet, each time, Hosea goes to find her and bring her back home again. At one point he actually has to buy her back from one of her patrons. Many references are made to the adulterous relationships Gomer had, but God instructed Hosea to love his wife, though she committed adultery. Now that is blind obedience. Could you do it? Take a moment and think back over your life, has there ever been a time you were fully aware you were doing what God wanted and not what you wanted? Let me know in the comment section below. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
