Autumn! The kickoff to the holiday season. But have you giving thanks first? Have you thanked God as if you already have it? Can you thank God for the greatest gift of all, before you even receive it?
Fall is a time of transition. We’re exchanging prime real estate in our closets. Moving tees out and turtlenecks in. The leaves are changing from bright cheerful greens to warm shades of gold, bronze and burnt orange. But all that, is in the natural. It’s in what you can see, touch and feel.
Spiritually, we must celebrate the change as well, the transition from Ordinary Time to a time of expectancy and anticipation. Advent has always been my favorite season. As a kid of course I loved it for being the season of gift receiving. Halloween meant Mrs. A next door made a batch of her homemade Candied Apples. Thanksgiving opened hunting season, which meant family would be coming to town. They’d bring those creme filled logs rolled in pecans. Yum! And Christmas! Well, Christmas meant gifts from everybody! But now, as an adult, I love the Advent season for a much more purposeful reason.
During the season I receive or rather celebrate, the best gift of all…. the virgin birth of the holy baby Jesus. I commemorate the season of Advent as the pre-party to the main event. Instead of rubbing my palms together thinking of all the wonderful gifts that would begin to pour in, only pondering the ‘thank you’ after receipt. I now celebrate Advent by expressing gratitude. Gratitude for what I know I will receive AND for what I have already received. How about joining me? Listed in the article below are oodles of ways we can express our thankfulness and gratitude this Advent Season! From family service projects to days of service on holidays. Jump in!
